Jennifer Lawrence Says She’s Reconsidering Speaking Out On Politics, “Celebrities Do Not Make A Difference”

Jennifer Lawrence is rethinking how and whether she shares her political views publicly.

While appearing on a podcast interview released Friday, the Die My Love star reflected on her years of political advocacy and her long-standing criticism of former President Donald Trump, suggesting that she may take a more restrained approach moving forward.

“I don’t really know if I should,” Lawrence said on the Nov. 1 episode. “We’ve learned election after election, celebrities do not make a difference whatsoever on who people vote for. And so then what am I doing? I’m just sharing my opinion on something that’s going to just add fuel to a fire that’s ripping the country apart. I mean, we are so divided.”

The Oscar-winning actor, 35, said she’s currently “in a complicated recalibration” about how to engage politically without alienating audiences.

“I don’t want to start turning people off to films and to art that could change consciousness or change the world because they don’t like my political opinions,” she explained. “If I can’t say something that’s going to speak to some kind of peace or lowering the temperature, or some sort of solution, I just don’t want to be a part of the problem. I don’t want to make the problem worse.”

Though she may scale back her political commentary in interviews or on social media, Lawrence said she plans to continue addressing political themes through her creative work. “A lot of my movies coming out from my production company are expressions of the political landscape,” she told. “That’s how I feel like I can be helpful.”

Jennifer Lawrence, who grew up in a Republican household, has been open about her political evolution. She previously revealed that she voted for John McCain in 2008 before identifying as a Democrat during Barack Obama’s presidency. “Through Obama’s presidency, and growing up to realize I was voting against my own rights, I am proud to say I am a Democrat,” she said in 2020.

The Silver Linings Playbook star has often spoken out about her opposition to Trump, famously telling Entertainment Weekly in 2015, “If Donald Trump becomes president, that will be the end of the world.” She later endorsed Joe Biden in 2020, telling V Magazine, “Donald Trump has and will continue to put himself before the safety and well-being of America. He does not represent my values as an American, and most importantly as a human being.”

In 2022, Jennifer Lawrence criticized those who disengage from politics telling, “You live in the United States of America. You have to be political. It’s too dire. Politics are killing people.”

Ahead of the 2024 presidential election, Lawrence endorsed Democratic nominee Kamala Harris, telling People, “She’s an amazing candidate and I know that she will do whatever she can to protect reproductive rights.”

On the Interview podcast, Jennifer Lawrence also reflected on Trump’s ongoing political influence and why his potential second term “feels different” from the first. “He said what he was going to do,” she said. “We knew what he did for four years. He was very clear. And that’s what we chose, again.”

The conversation comes as Lawrence promotes Die My Love, her latest film and one of the season’s major Oscar contenders. The actress stars opposite Robert Pattinson as a young mother unraveling in isolation in the French countryside. The drama, which premiered to critical acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival, marks Lawrence’s first role since her 2023 comedy No Hard Feelings. Early reviews have hailed her performance as one of her most powerful to date, with many predicting a return to the Academy Awards spotlight.

As she navigates awards season and a politically charged cultural moment, Jennifer Lawrence seems determined to focus her energy where she believes it matters most on her art.
